The Scratched Royal Tetra is a recent discovery, first found in a shallow, moderately flowing clear stream with a sandy substrate and abundant vegetation. It is best kept as a shoal in a well-maintained softwater aquarium, where its colours deepen and intensify with age.

About the Species

  • Scientific name: Inpaichthys parauapiranga
  • Common names: Scratched Royal Tetra, Scratched Inpa Tetra, Purplestriped King Tetra
  • Origin: Amazon basin, Mato Grosso state, Brazil
  • Adult size: Around 3 to 4 cm total length
  • Appearance: Distinctive royal purple and red longitudinal stripes with fine dotted markings that give it a "scratched" or etched look along the flanks
  • Behaviour: Peaceful, lively schooling fish
  • Care level: Moderate

Scientific Description

  • Formally described in early 2024 by researchers Ferreira et al.
  • A newly described, peaceful freshwater tetra species.

Aquarium Care

  • Temperature: 23 °C to 27 °C
  • pH: 5.5 to 7.2
  • Hardness: 2 to 12 dGH
  • Best kept in groups to reduce stress and curb any aggression.

Tank Setup

  • Thrives in a well-planted aquarium with driftwood, subdued lighting and natural leaf litter that replicate its shallow-stream habitat.
  • Soft, slightly acidic water with stable conditions is ideal.

Feeding

  • Offer a varied diet of good quality flake, micropellets and small frozen foods such as bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, vitamin-enriched brineshrimp and daphnia.
  • Live foods are taken eagerly.

Breeding

  • This species has been bred in the home aquarium.
  • Small numbers of fry may appear from time to time in heavily planted tanks. To raise a larger number of young, a separate breeding aquarium should be set up.
  • Use soft, acidic water, ideally with a pH between 5.5 and 6.8 and a general hardness below 8 degrees, filtered through a small air-driven sponge filter.

Tank Mates

  • Peaceful community fish of a similar size make suitable companions.
  • Avoid large or boisterous species that could intimidate or outcompete them.
