Like most Mbunas (African word meaning rock dweller), they show intense intra-species aggressiveness. Their aggressiveness is more restricted to males of the same species and other fish of similar patterns and colors.
Minimum aquarium: 100 cm long X 40 cm wide — To maintain a harem with one male and several females, consider an aquarium at least 100 cm long, for a community aquarium of at least 150 cm. The aquarium for the species, as for any Mbuna cichlid, should contain numerous rocks forming a rocky wall to take refuge and demarcate territory. Leave some free space for them to swim.
