What You See Is What You Get

The Ricordea Family

Ricordea Florida mushrooms are a characteristic species of the Caribbean and have been popular in the Reef aquarium for decades. Their body is covered by a uniform carpet of short bubble-shaped tentacles that create the distinctive look of these corallimorphs. Ricordea Florida is easy to care for and is an excellent addition to a reef aquarium, both for beginners and experts.

See below for additional care tips for Ricordea.

Location

Ricordea Florida are corallimorph mushrooms from the Caribbean and tend to be hardier than their Pacific cousins (Ricordea yuma).

Lighting

Ricordea mushrooms do not require as much light as some other corals, medium light is sufficient. In some cases, they may open more easily under lower lighting, however, they can display more attractive colors when placed under stronger lighting.

Low light

Low light is between 30 - 50 PAR per unit area

Medium light

Medium light is between 50 - 150 PAR per unit area

Intense light

Intense light is above 150 PAR per unit area

Water Flow

We recommend keeping the mushrooms in an area with relatively low flow in the aquarium. Excessive flow can cause this particular species to become stressed and not fully open, or even detach from the substrate to find a better location. If a Ricordea ps. Florida polyp detaches from the substrate, place it in a low-flow area of the aquarium with some rubble, and the mushroom will reattach comfortably.

Feeding

Ricordea mushrooms get much of their energy from the products of zooxanthellae. Nevertheless, they can be fed with small pieces of food and can benefit from regular feeding.
