Easy Reefs Phosphate K.O (PKO)

Easy Reefs Phosphate K.O (PKO) is a revolutionary powdered clay material designed for the removal of phosphate from aquariums. Presented at Interzoo in May, this innovative product utilizes clay to effectively bind and eliminate phosphate, marking a unique addition to the reefing market.

The key ingredient is ionically modified bentonite, known for its exceptional absorbent and adsorbent properties. When introduced to water, PKO reacts with phosphate, forming a new insoluble compound that prevents phosphate from re-entering the water column. Results can be observed within three hours of adding the product to your tank. PKO is inert and won't cause adverse shifts in alkalinity. Remarkably, just one kilogram of PKO can eliminate more than 30 grams of phosphate, as claimed by its makers.

Unique Application Method

What sets PKO apart is its application method. Instead of mixing it with water to form a solid (similar to Masstick), you create a liquid mixture by blending one part powder with four parts water. This liquid solution can be administered directly into the aquarium. Interestingly, Easy Reefs suggests using a standard dosing pump to add PKO, offering a novel hybrid approach that combines the advantages of both liquid and solid phosphate removers.

Once the clay is saturated, it won't leach into the water. If kept in suspension by high flow rates, it can be captured and removed by mechanical filtration, taking the bound phosphate with it.

Product Details:

  • Product Name: Easy Reefs Phosphate K.O (PKO)
  • Net Weight: 250 grams

Usage Instructions:

PKO is designed to block and remove the bioavailability of Orthophosphate (PO43-) oxyanions from both freshwater and marine aquariums. The bonding of PKO and PO43- results in the formation of an insoluble and biologically inert compound that won't release free ions into the water.

Instructions for Preparation:

Disperse 100 grams of PKO in 400 grams of water and blend until you achieve a uniform, lump-free mixture. If stirring is done manually, it's advisable to repeat the stirring after four hours for proper dispersion. The prepared dispersion can be stored in a cool, dry place and used for up to 30 days.

Usage Guidelines:

For example, in a 500-liter aquarium with an initial PO43- concentration of 1 ppm:

  1. Measure and record the aquarium's PO43- concentration before adding the PKO dispersion.
  2. Add 50 ml of the dispersion.
  3. After 24 hours, measure and record the PO43- concentration again. The difference between the initial and subsequent readings will indicate the reduction in PO43-. Repeat this procedure daily until your desired level is reached.
  4. Adjust the quantity of product as needed based on the rate at which you wish to reduce the PO43- concentration to your target level.

The PKO dispersion can be dosed manually or via a peristaltic pump, preferably at the beginning of the night period and in an area of maximum water circulation.

Additional Notes:

Adjustment Period: We recommend a 4-week adjustment period to reach a concentration of 0.05 ppm of PO43-.

Maintaining Target Level: Once a concentration of 0.05 ppm of PO43- is achieved, discontinue adding PKO, allow one week to elapse without adding, and verify that the concentration remains around 0.03 - 0.025 ppm of PO43-. Resume adding PKO if necessary.

Caution: This product is not for consumption. For aquarium use only. Keep out of the reach of children. Avoid inhalation and contact with eyes and skin.
