More info
Common Name: Red Rili Shrimp
Order: Decapoda — Family: Atyidae (Freshwater Shrimps)
Distribution: Originally from Taiwan; selectively bred in captivity
Lifespan: 1.5 to 2 years
pH: 6.5 to 7.5 — Hardness: 4 to 12 dGH
Temperature: 18°C to 26°C (64°F to 79°F)
Minimum Aquarium Size: 20 liters (5 gallons). A planted tank with moss and hiding places is ideal for their well-being, as well as a fine-grained substrate to promote natural foraging behavior.
Behavior & Compatibility:
A peaceful species that thrives in groups. Can be kept in community tanks with non-aggressive fish, but predatory species should be avoided. Best kept in a shrimp-only setup or with small, peaceful tank mates like nano fish and snails.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Feeds on biofilm, algae, and detritus in the aquarium. Can be supplemented with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods like bloodworms.
Reproduction:
Egg-layer. Females carry eggs under their abdomen until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults. No larval stage occurs. A stable environment with clean water and no predators increases survival rates.
Sexual Dimorphism:
Females are larger, have a more intense coloration, and display a visible "saddle" (cluster of developing eggs) on their back before carrying eggs.
Biotope:
Originally from slow-moving, heavily vegetated freshwater streams in Taiwan, though the Red Rili variety is a selectively bred color morph.
Etymology:
Neocaridina means "new Caridina," referring to its close relation to the genus Caridina. Davidi honors French biologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards, and "Red Rili" describes its unique red-and-transparent coloration.
