It inhabits the so-called intermediate zones of Lake MALAWI, where rock formations give way to sandy bottoms with rocks occasionally scattered. The water is generally relatively shallow, between 4-6 meters, although it has been recorded as deep as 16 meters. The captive diet should contain a variety of high quality and fine grade prepared meats and vegetables, as well as small live and/or frozen foods.
Adult males are larger and more colorful than females.
