Appearance
The Marmalade Cat Cichlid features a robust body and is characterized by its beautiful orange to reddish-brown coloration, reminiscent of a marmalade cat. These fish exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males generally having more intense and vivid colors compared to females. The dorsal fin of males often has elongated filamentous extensions, adding to their striking appearance.
Habitat and Range
In its natural habitat, Labeotropheus trewavasae Marmalade Cat is found in the rocky shores and areas with plenty of crevices in Lake Malawi. The rocky environment provides hiding places and territories for these cichlids. They are part of the larger group known as mbuna, which are cichlids dwelling among the rocks along the lake's shoreline.
Maximum Size
Marmalade Cat Cichlids typically reach a maximum size of around 12 to 15 centimeters.
Water Conditions
- Temperature: 23–28°C - pH: 7.6–8.6 - Hardness: 10–18 dGH
Diet
In the wild, Marmalade Cat Cichlids feed on algae and small invertebrates. In captivity, they can be fed a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake, supplemented with occasional offerings of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to enhance their coloration and provide variety in their diet.
Behavior and Compatibility
Labeotropheus trewavasae Marmalade Cat is known for its territorial and sometimes aggressive behavior, especially among males. It is advisable to keep them in larger aquariums with plenty of rockwork to establish territories and hiding spots. While they can be kept in a community setup with other Lake Malawi cichlids, careful consideration should be given to the compatibility of tankmates to avoid aggression and overcompetition.
Reproduction
The Marmalade Cat Cichlid is a mouthbrooder, with the female incubating the eggs in her mouth. After spawning, the female will carry the fry in her mouth for protection. It is recommended to provide ample hiding places for fry to seek refuge once they are released.
