Overview
Andinoacara rivulatus, also known as the Green Terror, is a fish belonging to the cichlid family and originates from South America. It can be found along the Pacific coast, ranging from the Esmeraldas River in Ecuador to the Tumbes River in Peru. This species can reach a maximum size of 30 cm, although a common size is around 20 cm, and it has an average lifespan of approximately 8 years.
The Green Terror is known for its variable temperament, meaning that its behavior can be unpredictable. It is highly popular in the aquarium hobby due to its hardiness and visually appealing appearance, with vibrant colors. It is an excellent choice for both beginners and enthusiasts who want a fish with a strong personality and striking colors.
Aquarium and Behavior
It is recommended to keep the Green Terror either alone or with other cichlids and fish of similar size. A minimum aquarium size of 200 liters is required to house a single specimen or a breeding pair. For a community aquarium, a tank of at least 350 liters is ideal.
The aquarium should have a sandy substrate and be decorated with driftwood and rocks, which can serve as spawning sites or territorial markers. Hardy plants can also be used in the setup.
Despite its name "Green Terror" implying aggression, the behavior of the Green Terror can vary significantly, and peaceful individuals can be observed. However, it can become aggressive, especially in smaller aquariums or during the breeding period. It is important to consider the personality of this species.
Reproduction and Sexual Dimorphism
The Green Terror is an oviparous species. The female selects a flat surface, typically rocks or leaves, to deposit her eggs. After fertilization (usually over 200 eggs), the eggs hatch in approximately three days. During this time, the male tends to become aggressive, chasing away potential intruders from the territory, while the female cares for the fry.
There is a noticeable size difference between males and females. Males have longer and more pointed dorsal and anal fins. Although both sexes exhibit similar color patterns, these characteristics are slightly more pronounced in males.
Feeding
The Green Terror is an omnivorous fish. In its natural habitat, it feeds on small invertebrates, insects, and occasionally small fish. In the aquarium, it readily accepts dry and live foods. It is also known to consume snails.
