More info
Common Name: Madagascar Rainbowfish
Order: Atheriniformes — Family: Bedotiidae (Bedotiids)
Distribution: Madagascar, Mananjary and Mangoro River basins
Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
pH: 6.5 to 7.5 — Hardness: 5 to 15 dGH
Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F)
Minimum Aquarium Size: 80 cm (length) x 40 cm (width). A well-oxygenated environment with open swimming spaces and marginal vegetation is recommended to simulate its natural habitat.
Behavior & Compatibility:
A peaceful yet active species. It can be kept in community tanks with similarly sized fish. Should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
Diet:
Omnivorous. In the wild, it feeds on insects, larvae, and small crustaceans. In aquariums, it readily accepts high-quality dry food as well as live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mosquito larvae.
Reproduction:
Oviparous. Spawning occurs among aquatic plants, with eggs adhering to leaves and substrate. Parents may eat the eggs, so separating them can increase the survival rate of the fry.
Sexual Dimorphism:
Males display brighter colors, elongated fins, and more vibrant hues, while females have a more robust body and duller coloration.
Biotope:
Inhabits moderate to fast-flowing rivers and streams with clear, well-oxygenated water, surrounded by dense vegetation.
Etymology:
Bedotia honors Swiss biologist Maurice Bedot, while geayi refers to Martin Geay, a specimen collector in Madagascar.
