It is best kept in a densely planted aquarium. It is an excellent choice for an aquascape setting. The addition of some floating plants and trunk roots or branches to diffuse the light entering the aquarium also seems to be appreciated and adds a more natural feel. If you want to rear fry alongside the adults, add a thin-leaved aquatic moss, such as Taxiphylum sp. it's advisable.
The filtration does not need to be particularly strong as they mainly come from slow moving water and can suffer if there is too fast a current. Do not add this fish to a biologically immature aquarium as it can be susceptible to fluctuations in water chemistry.
Very peaceful, but not suitable for the general community aquarium as food easily reaches it and the long fins of mature males can be bitten off by certain common species. Best kept alone or with fish of comparable size and disposition, such as Pseudomugil spp. the genera Caridina and Neocaridina are also suitable.
It is a schooling species by nature and should really be kept in groups of at least 6, ideally 10 or more. Keeping it in such numbers will not only make the fish less nervous, it will result in a more effective and natural display. The males will also display their best colors and some fascinating behaviors as they compete with each other for the attention of the females.
It feeds on phytoplankton, diatoms and other zooplankton floating or suspended in nature, and the aquarium must offer elements of an adequate size for its small mouth. Ideally, much of the diet should include live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Moina, Artemia nauplii, microworm, copepods, etc., although small/crushed floating dry foods (such as flakes or pellets) are also acceptable.
