More info
Cordyoras trilneatus will thrive in an aquarium created to replicate an Amazonian biotope. That would be very easy to get. Use a river sand substrate and add some wooden branches and/or bare roots. A handful of dried leaves (Terminalia catappa or oak leaves are also suitable) to complete a more natural appearance.
Alternatively, it also works if kept in a typical community tank, preferably while planted. A good maintenance regime is essential with this species, as it is sensible to the deterioration of the water conditions. As with all Corys, do not use background filtration and ensure that the substrate is kept scrupulously clean. These catfish are sensitive to succesful or poorly maintained substrates and can lose their chins if they remain in poorly maintained conditions.
It is very common to see this species on sale as “leopard” or even more as Corydoras julii. La mayoría de los peces sold as C. julii son en realidad C. trilineatus. The "true" C. julii is quite rare in hobby, as it is not present in much of the Amazon waters that are commercially fished. Species have a very similar appearance and correct identification may turn out to be very complicated without knowing where the pez was recognized in question.
According to the majority of the sources, C. julii should have a pattern of fine spots on the head, being replaced by a pattern more reticulated in C. trilineatus. However, specimens of C. trilineatus have also been registered that show this moteed patrón, and the general patrón of both species can be quite variable.
For the majority of hobbyists, identification is not a big problem, and it must be decided that C. trilineatus is among the best options for the hobbyist and the recipient of catfish.
