More info
The Acanthurus bariene, also known as the Blackspot Tang or Eyespot Tang, is a captivating species from the Acanthuridae family, widely distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific region, from Mozambique to Papua New Guinea, with a particularly strong presence in the Philippines. This herbivorous fish primarily feeds on algae and is typically found in coral reef slopes and sandy areas, at depths ranging from 1 to 50 meters.
In its juvenile stage, the Acanthurus bariene has a brown coloration with an orange dorsal fin and a whitish tail. As it matures, the fish transitions to a grey body color, featuring a distinctive black spot behind the eye, a yellow dorsal fin, and blue accents.
The Bariene Tang is a peaceful fish and generally gets along well with other species, although it is advisable to avoid keeping it with other Tangs in smaller tanks to prevent conflicts. Ideally, it should be housed in an aquarium with a minimum volume of 900 liters, equipped with strong water circulation to ensure good oxygenation, and decorated with live rock to promote algae growth.
Although its care level is considered intermediate, the Bariene Tang is hardy and adaptable, provided that water conditions—including temperature, pH, salinity, and hardness—are maintained within the recommended ranges. This fish has a lifespan of around 20 years, making it a long-lasting and impressive addition to marine aquariums.
For feeding, it is recommended to offer dried seaweeds like nori or kombu, avoiding vegetables like lettuce and chard, as these are not part of its natural diet and can be harmful. The Acanthurus bariene is considered reef-safe, but caution is advised as it is known to jump out of the tank.
If you are looking for a species that combines beauty, resilience, and a peaceful nature, the Acanthurus bariene is an excellent choice, bringing a unique touch of exoticism to your aquarium.
