Description
The Bodianus sepiacaudus, also known as the Pacific Redstripe Hogfish, Masudai Hogfish, Candystripe Hogfish, or Black Spot Hogfish, is a brilliant red fish with distinctive white horizontal stripes. Its common name comes from its coloration and elongated body shape. This fish belongs to the Bodianus genus and has recently been properly classified as Bodianus sepiacaudus.
With its semi-aggressive temperament, these fish can be a great addition to a saltwater fish or reef aquarium. However, some caution should be exercised when introducing them to other tank inhabitants.
A 300-litre (or larger) aquarium with hiding places should be provided for this species. It is generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior, especially when introduced to a new environment or if multiple Pacific Redstripe Hogfish are added simultaneously.
Keep in mind that this species is known to jump out of open aquaria, so a secure lid is recommended. They primarily feed on worms, small bivalves, and small crustaceans, often searching through the sand for food, which can temporarily cloud the water and stir up detritus.
