Overview: The Yellowtail Black Blenny, or Flametail Blenny, is notable for its bold black and yellow blocks of colour. It can be mistaken for the Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor) at first glance, but it has a more refined appearance with a rounded head and lacks the antennae‑like cirri found on the Bicolor. The most obvious distinction is the tail: the Yellowtail Black has a rounded caudal fin, whereas the Bicolor’s is more truncate.
This species thrives in an aquarium of at least 114 L with plenty of rockwork. It spends much of its time among crevices and bottom rockwork, occasionally perching on higher rocks to forage. It shows a lot of personality and is normally peaceful with tankmates, though it may nip at other blennies, small gobies, dartfish and similarly shaped species.
Feeding: Offer a balanced diet combining meaty foods with herbivore‑style items to ensure proper nutrition and vibrant colouration.
