More info

Bill Addison, legendary saltwater fish breeder, coined the term Gladiator when describing a variety of clownfish he discovered in his hatchery. We imagine that Bill must have found specimens with a unique pattern in a batch of Amphiprion ocellaris that sported head patterns that resemble a helmet. Luckily, gladiator genetics were hereditary and Bill created a bloodline of this variety. It appears that not all gladiator specimens display the warrior helmet pattern; most only have bars that are noticeably wider than their siblings without the gladiator gene. Other gladiators display swirls, connecting bars, or white patterns not found in wild-type specimens.

The gladiator mutation manifests itself in a wide range of phenotypes, probably more unique than the Picasso variety of A. percula, but it works the same way: if you breed two fish with the phenotype, you'll usually end up with a wild-type mix fish, gladiators and also a percentage of almost all white fish. Within lots of gladiator clownfish, these all-white fish are called Wyoming Whites, another variety originally named by Bill Addison. We note that although gladiator genetics behaves similarly to Picasso genetics, we do not find the same percentage of fish projected into gladiator lots. There are fewer gladiators per batch than we expected, which makes them a little difficult to produce in large quantities. However, there is a way around this - more breeding! As additional pairs start producing spawns for us, we expect to have gladiators available more regularly.

Gladiators are sold under a variety of industry names, including DaVinci and Fancy clownfish. Rather than invent a new name for an existing fish, we thought it would be better to honor the original Gladiator name that Bill used.

Sold in pairs.
