Timor Wrasse is known from shallow coastal reefs with rocky substrates and dense coral and algae growth, to depths of 15 m (49 ft). This species is only present from Sri Lanka to Indonesia and is most often seen in small loose aggregations, dominated by a large male. Timor Wrasse is a bright and fascinating addition to reef aquariums where no ornamental shrimp, snails or fanworms are present. The pond should be mature and provided with plenty of live rock to provide feeding opportunities, shady hiding places and visual barriers.

There should be a deep sand bed of about 5 cm or more so that the wrasse can burrow in at night or if startled. Keep a single specimen or, if the tank is large enough, a group of 5 or 6 good-sized individuals (preferably introduced simultaneously). Timorese wrasses are non-aggressive and can be kept alongside some of the more docile species such as Firefish, Flash Wrasse and Fairy Wrasse. It is not uncommon for this species to clean other fish in the aquarium and this behavior should not be confused with aggression. Powerful filtration and circulation with a high level of oxygenation are essential, as are tight lids to prevent it from jumping out of the aquarium. Timor Wrasse can often be observed looking for small live foods such as commensal worms, pyramid snails (mollusc parasites), hedgehogs, small isopods and small worms.

In the home aquarium, Timor Wrasse's diet should include vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp and vitamin-enriched frozen saltwater shrimp. The Timor Wrasse fish likes to be constantly looking for food so it requires frequent small feedings throughout the day.
