Behavior & Compatibility:
A solitary and territorial predator, the Antennata lionfish is not overly aggressive but should not be kept with small fish or ornamental invertebrates. Its dorsal spines are venomous and can cause painful stings, so careful handling is essential. Best housed with similarly sized or larger fish that are not aggressive or overly competitive.

Diet:
Carnivore. In the wild, it feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and other benthic invertebrates. In aquariums, it accepts live or frozen foods such as shrimp, small fish, krill, and larvae. A varied diet is crucial to maintain health and coloration.

Reproduction:
Oviparous. Rarely bred in captivity. During spawning, the pair releases eggs and sperm into the water column. Eggs float and typically hatch within 48 hours. The larvae are extremely small and difficult to raise in captivity.

Sexual Dimorphism:
No prominent visual differences between males and females. Sex can usually only be determined through behavior during spawning.

Natural Habitat & Biotope:
Found in coral reef environments, protected coastal lagoons, and rocky areas between 2 and 30 meters deep. Prefers habitats with caves, overhangs, and coral structures where it hides during the day and hunts at dusk.

Etymology:
The genus name Pterois is derived from the Greek word “pteron,” meaning “wing,” referring to the fish’s large pectoral fins. The species name antennata refers to the antenna-like appendages located above the eyes.
