GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny, also known as the Segmented Blenny, boasts a vertically striped body marked with alternating bands of yellow and reddish tan. With a peaceful temperament and an engaging personality, this species adds charm to any aquarium setting.
AQUARIUM SUITABILITY
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. A well-established tank of 30 gallons or more, with multiple swimming levels and ample rock formations, provides an ideal habitat. While generally non-aggressive, this blenny may display hostility towards tank mates with a similar physique unless they are a mated pair or housed in a larger tank setting.
CARE AND HARDINESS
Being an easy-to-care-for species, the Segmented Sailfin Blenny thrives in well-established aquariums with abundant natural algae for grazing. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter, Spirulina, and herbivore preparations ensures their optimal health and well-being.
REEF SUITABILITY
Highly suitable for reef environments, the Segmented Blenny is considered reef-safe but may occasionally nip at the polyps or bases of certain SPS corals like Acropora sp. In heavily stocked SPS-dominated tanks, these fish may cause damage to Acropora sp. and Montipora sp. colonies.
AQUARIUM SETUP
Creating a tank environment with ample natural algae growth, multiple swimming levels, and a variety of rock formations is crucial for the Segmented Sailfin Blenny's well-being. Providing hiding spots and ensuring a stable water temperature and quality are also essential for maintaining a healthy habitat.
BEHAVIOUR
Known for their playful and inquisitive nature, Segmented Sailfin Blennies enjoy perching and hopping between rocks in search of microalgae. Their peaceful demeanor makes them a great addition to community tanks, especially when kept singly or in mated pairs in larger tank setups.
FEEDING AND DIET
As herbivores, Segmented Sailfin Blennies primarily feed on microalgae and other plant matter. Supplementing their diet with vegetable-based foods, Spirulina, and herbivore preparations helps ensure a balanced and nutritious intake.
DIMORPHISM
This species exhibits no significant dimorphic characteristics. In captivity, Segmented Sailfin Blennies have been successfully bred, with proper care and suitable tank conditions enabling breeding and reproduction.
HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION
In their natural habitat, Segmented Sailfin Blennies can be found in tropical waters with ample rock formations and algae growth. They are commonly distributed in regions where they can graze on algae and exhibit their characteristic striped appearance.
