More info
Tetraodon nigroviridis
Classification
Family: Tetraodontidae
Distribution
A widespread species, found in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Habitat
Occurs in brackish water in coastal areas; freshwater rivers, streams, lakes, and flooded areas.
Maximum Standard Length
17 cm, although this is considered very large in aquariums. Usually 10 to 15 cm.
Minimum Aquarium Size
120 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm - 110 litres.
Maintenance
Best kept in a heavily-planted setup with twisted roots and branches to provide additional cover, although soft-leaved plants may be chewed by the fish. Leave some open spaces in between for swimming, as this is an active species. Regular partial water changes are essential as this species is sensitive to deteriorating water conditions. It can be maintained in freshwater or with the addition of marine salt to a specific gravity of around 1.005.
Water Conditions
Temperature: 24-28°C
pH: 7.5-8.5
Hardness: 10-20°H
Diet
Relishes all kinds of shellfish, worms, and other live and frozen foods. Regular feeding of unshelled shellfish such as crab legs and snails is necessary to maintain its sharp teeth.
Behaviour and Compatibility
Can be kept in a community tank but exercise caution with tankmates as it may nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish. It's best kept with robust, active species and should not be housed with conspecifics unless in a large tank with plenty of hiding places.
Sexual Dimorphism
No information available. Sexing appears impossible by external characteristics.
Reproduction
Not easy but has been achieved in aquariums. Spawning occurs in brackish water, and eggs are laid on flat rock surfaces. Fry are guarded by the male and require specialized care.
