Pseudomugil luminatus
Pseudomugil luminatus, commonly known as the Luminatus Blue-eye, is a small and strikingly colorful freshwater fish species that belongs to the family Melanotaeniidae. These fish are native to Australia and are highly regarded by aquarists for their vibrant appearance and fascinating behavior.
Appearance
The Luminatus Blue-eye is characterized by its translucent body and, as the name suggests, bright blue eyes. Their body is slender and elongated, typically reaching a length of around 3 to 4 centimeters (approximately 1.2 to 1.6 inches). What sets them apart is their unique coloration, with a shimmering, almost iridescent appearance. The dorsal fin often displays an attractive yellow or greenish hue.
Habitat and Range
In their natural habitat, Pseudomugil luminatus can be found in clear, slow-moving streams, creeks, and still waters across northern Australia. They prefer densely vegetated areas with ample hiding spots among aquatic plants and submerged branches.
Behavior and Care
Luminatus Blue-eyes are known for their peaceful and social behavior. They are best kept in a community aquarium with other small, non-aggressive fish species. Providing a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and gentle water movement mimics their natural habitat and promotes their well-being.
Diet
In the wild, Pseudomugil luminatus primarily feed on small aquatic invertebrates and algae. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of high-quality flake food, live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small aquatic organisms.
Reproduction
Breeding Luminatus Blue-eye fish is a rewarding experience for many aquarists. They are known to be egg scatterers, and a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants is recommended. The male will display vibrant colors and court the female, leading to the scattering of eggs. After spawning, it's advisable to remove the adults from the breeding tank to prevent them from eating the eggs.
