Anampses lineatus, known as the Lined Wrasse. Originating from the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and Central/West Pacific, this fish is a stunning addition to your aquarium, reaching a maximum length of 13 cm.

As an Aquarium Fish:

  • Minimum Volume: 400 liters

  • Hardiness: Average

  • Suitable for Aquarium: Requires experience, preparation, and extra care

  • Reef Safe: Always reef safe

  • Aggressiveness: Docile, but may be aggressive towards similar species of the same gender

Feeding:

  • Recommended: Other invertebrates, small crustaceans (Krill, mysis, artemia...), zooplankton (Cyclops, pods...)

  • Beware of: Jumps out of open aquariums; can be a threat to small crustaceans

Important Considerations:

  • Sensitivity: Very sensitive during transportation and acclimatizing into the aquarium

  • Live Food: Greater chance of success with live food for adaptation to the tank

  • Deep Sandy Substrate: This species needs a minimum of 2 inches (5 cm) of sand in the aquarium bottom for burrowing

  • Acclimatizes Best as a Juvenile: Better acclimatization if introduced when young; very small individuals can be delicate

  • Frequent Feeding: Requires feeding several times a day, especially when newly added; less frequent when natural food is available

  • Social Structure: Functions best as a pair (one male, one female) or one male with several females

  • Docile: This species is very shy and docile, so caution is advised when keeping it with more aggressive fish

  • Hermaphroditic: This species can change gender from female to male.

Genus Description (Anampses): Species in the genus Anampses are often very beautiful, but it can be a challenge to keep them in good condition. There is a great difference in appearance, not only between males and females but also between juvenile and adult fish.

The greatest chance of success with these fish is when they get live food right from the start and if they are being fed frequently. Even though these fish become quite large, they are not normally a threat to shrimps and other invertebrates, except the very small ones.

These Wrasses are typically peaceful towards others and thrive best in a small group with just one male. When they feel threatened or need to rest, they bury themselves in the sand.

Selecting these fish requires care during transport to avoid injuries. Very small individuals need feeding very often, and the larger ones find it hard to acclimatize.

It is not easy to add them to an existing aquarium with other fish, as these Wrasses can be very shy. It is an advantage if one has an empty tank or one with peaceful species until they start feeding and become bolder. Elevate your aquarium experience with the alluring Lined Wrasse!
