Description
The Magenta Dottyback (Pictichromis porphyrea) is a vibrant and attractive marine fish prized for its stunning magenta and purple coloration. Originating from the Western Pacific, these dottybacks are popular choices for reef aquariums due to their striking appearance and ease of care.
This species exhibits a semi-aggressive temperament, making it important to choose tankmates carefully. While they can be territorial, they generally coexist well with other peaceful fish species. They may establish a territory within the aquarium but are unlikely to pose a threat to larger tankmates.
Magenta Dottybacks are carnivores and should be offered a varied diet consisting of high-quality meaty foods. This can include frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other small marine invertebrates. Providing a balanced diet will ensure their health and vibrancy.
They are considered reef-compatible and can be kept in a reef aquarium without issue. However, caution should be exercised if keeping them with other dottyback species or similarly sized fish, as territorial aggression may occur.
A minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and shelter. With proper care, the Magenta Dottyback can thrive and become a captivating addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
